Angel: Season 2

Deutsche Version | Season 1 | Season 3

Disc 1

Judgement

Synopsis: After Angel accidentally killed the demon bodyguard of a young, pregnant woman he feels obliged to take his role. But the young woman wants nothing to do with hin. On the other hand she needs a champion for the tribunal she has to face.

My Opinion: Karaoke, I love karaoke. :) It was simply cute to see Angel croaking on that stage. And the jousting on the middle of the main road: great idea. I liked that episode.

Are You Now, Or Have You Ever Been?

Synopsis: Something strange happened in the long-closed Hyperion Hotel. Angel has lived there in the 1950s and something is pulling him back there.

My Opinion: We have seen it in the first season due to Angel’s age we are able to see flashbacks into former times and thus connect the past and the present. I’ve always liked that in Highlander and I did like it here, too.

First Impressions

Synopsis: Cordelia gets a vision of Gunn being in mortal danger, but she can’t reach neither Angel nor Wesley. Because Angel has sweet dreams about Darla.

My Opinion: It looks like Darla is indeed becoming the season enemy and I think that could become very interesting. After all, Angel was the best enemy Buffy ever had.

Untouched

Synopsis: A young woman has extreme telekinetic abilities when she feels herself endangered. Angel tries to help but Wolfram & Hart has also an elaborated interest in her.

My Opinion: The Darla plot continues. But Angel is able to rain on the lawyer’s parade. What I did notice (again) was the fact that in Angel much more humans get killed (I mean the humans that get killed by the good guys) than in Buffy. Granted they are all bad guys but I noticed it anyway.

Angel: Season 1

Deutsche Version | Angel Marathon | Season 2

Disc 1

City of

Synopsis: Angel left Buffy and Sunnydale because he can’t be with her. After he moved into his basement apartment in L.A. he encounters Doyle, a half-demon. Doyle gets visions from “The Powers That Be” that show him which lives Angel must touch to find true salvation. It isn’t enough to save lives, he must save the souls as well. During the attempt to help a waitress who is terrorized by a former friend of hers he meets a powerful vampire…

My Opinion: This “The Powers That Be”-arc comes a bit surprisingly because we’ve already known Angel for three years. But they had to find a way for being Angel not just a Buffy-replacement.

Lonely Hearts

Synopsis: A serial killer haunts the single bars of L.A.. It’s a demon who needs a new body on a regular basis until he finds the right one. Angel decides to stop him.

My Opinion: I like this new female cop. It remains to be seen when she will find out who/what Angel really is. But that depends on whether she is a recurring character. I’d like that.

In the Dark

Synopsis: After Buffy took the “Gem of Amara” (a ring that makes a vampire invincible) from Spike she sends it to Angel. But Spike doesn’t give up that easily and he follows the ring to L.A.

My Opinion: Love to see Spike bad-ass-phase again, before he became “Hostile 17″, before the chip. I alos liked the decission to willingly destroy the ring instead of simply getting it lost somehow.

I Fall to Pieces

Synopsis: Angel helps a young woman who is stalked by her ex-boyfriend (strictly speaking they never were a pair). But this man is a surgeon with a very unique amputation technique.

My Opinion: Freak of the Week. Nothing exceptional.

Angel Marathon

Deutsche Version

After I had a lot of fun with my Babylon 5 marathon, I will continue to document my marathons here and the next one is Angel.

I watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer at the end of last year and then ordered Angel. It arrived shortly into the new year. Buffy was a blind buy for me but I enjoyed it a lot. Angel is also a blind buy which I am going to watch for the first time now.

Vantage Point

IMDb

I went to the theatre yesterday.

What’s going on?

The president of the US visits a summit in Salamanca, Spain. First he is shot and then a bomb explodes. We see the same events from 8 different POVs. 8 different people that are either directly or indirectly involved in the events.

I am often applying double standards. Personally I believe most people do that whether they admit it to themselves nor not.

If I like a movie I can turn a blind eye to (smaller) weaknesses. If I don’t like it, then this weaknesses are included in the judgement.

Spoilers follow!

The same happened to Vantage Point. During a great deal of the movie I felt well entertained. But the car chase and the end blew it for me.

1)
The characters of Dennis Quaid (Dragonheart) and Matthew Fox (Lost) are racing through the city of Salamanca. Dennis drives a compact car and gets a full hit by another car. Result: Some dents in the car, the chase goes on. Then he has to drive on a sidewalk and when it ends he has to break through two parking cars with little to no space between them. Result: Scratches on the bumper. The he gets a full hit by a track which smashes him into the corner of a house. Result: The car is totally destroyed, Dennis has a scratch. Of course he continues on foot and when Fox has a (in comparison) minor crash he is badly wounded and bleeds to death.

2)
The terrorists have shot several people and blown up a countless number of spectators. But thei evil plan fails because the bad terrorist avoids to hit a little girl on the middle of the street instead of running her over. And of course all main characters meet on exactly the spot where the crash happened.

Nothing against a happy end, but aren’t there smarter solutions? Has it to be that dumb?

And then the minors that I usually wouldn’t mind:

3)
The old, corpulent Forrest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) follows the Secret Service agents on foot with a video camera. And he has practically no problems to keep their pace. To be believable, they should have taken Jackie Chan for this – he even would have fulfilled the cliché of the japanese camera tourist (I know that JC is no japanese).

4)
Are they really trying to tell me that some of the Secret Service men don’t know that they are currently guarding a fake president?

I had the same problem with The Kingdom. The movie was ok in general, until one of Foxx’s men was kidnapped and they started this stupid rescue mission.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

William Shatner … Admiral James T. Kirk
Leonard Nimoy … Mr. Spock
DeForest Kelley … Dr. Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy
James Doohan … Cmdr. Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott
George Takei … Lt. Cmdr. Hikaru Sulu
Majel Barrett … Dr. Christine Chapel
Walter Koenig … Lt. Pavel Chekov
Nichelle Nichols … Lt. Cmdr. Uhura
Persis Khambatta … Lt. Ilia
Stephen Collins … Cmdr. Willard Decker
Grace Lee Whitney … CPO Janice Rand

A huge cloud travels through Klingon and Federation space. Who or what that cloud is, is unclear, but nothing seems to be able to stop it. What is certain, is its course: It’s directly heading for Earth. Admiral Kirk takes once again the command over the Enterprise, which has just been refit for 18 monts. Because another thing is certain: The Enterprise is the only ship that can reach the cloud before it comes to Earth.

My opinion:
“The only ship available” is a running gag which goes through all shows and movies. But when the Enterprise is in the orbit of Earth it becomes a bit implausible. That aside I think the refitting of the Enterprise worked very well, it’s a very elegant ship. And one thing is a given: this movie dwells in its pictures, in great panoramic views of the Enterprise, the universe and V’Ger. I also liked that not everything was sunshine and sparkles. I liked it when McCoy told Kirk off for being arrogant and that Kirk wasn’t infallable. BTW: Have you ever registered the fact that the two movies where the final solution was not a gun fight were both TOS movies?

Today it get’s a bit bloody.

Reservoir Dogs

Harvey Keitel … Mr. White / Larry Dimmick
Tim Roth … Mr. Orange / Freddy Newandyke
Michael Madsen … Mr. Blonde / Vic Vega
Chris Penn … Nice Guy Eddie Cabot
Steve Buscemi … Mr. Pink
Lawrence Tierney … Joe Cabot
Randy Brooks … Holdaway
Kirk Baltz … Marvin Nash
Edward Bunker … Mr. Blue
Quentin Tarantino … Mr. Brown

2 men return from a robbery that went bad, one of them badly wounded. In the course of time others also come back and they try to figure out what went wrong and why – that means, as long as they aren’t busy with threats of killing one another.

My opinion:
Tarantino movies are never shown in the order of the events that have taken place, this one’s no different. This one starts at the beginning of the second quarter, jumps to the third quarter and then fills the gaps of the first, second and fourth quarter. Of course one has to like Tarantino’s way of spilling blood or else one wouldn’t like this movie.

Twins

Arnold Schwarzenegger … Julius Benedict
Danny DeVito … Vincent Benedict
Kelly Preston … Marnie Mason
hloe Webb … Linda Mason
Bonnie Bartlett … Mary Ann Benedict
David Caruso … Al Greco

Julius is a product of genetic engineering. He has six fathers and one mother. He is highly intelligent and extremely strong. He lives on a caribbean island until he finds out that he has a twin brother. Only that his brother is nothing like him.

My opinion:
For his first comedy he did well. But DeVito was a good partner and I am sure he he gave him a lot of tips.
